Boogie Down Break Week- Midwinter Recess

February 18-25, 2017  

Celebrate dance, movement, and community all week long at the Children’s Museum. Dance together with new friends and family as you work together to create imaginary machines with your body, design new playground games, and take part in daily dance parties. Enjoy performances by the Thunderbird American Indian Dancers, Bollywood choreographer Minila Shah, and The Japanese Folk Dance Institute of NY, as well as workshops with Ballroom expert Arturo Perez and Broadway performer Angel Reed.

Make Me a Machine
Work with the Museum Educator and other participants to create an imaginary machine! Everyone will play a separate part that will combine together to make the machine move.

Thunderbird American Indian Dancers 
Specializing in the songs and dances of the tribes of the Northwest Coast, Woodlands (Iroquois and Winnebago), Plains (Sioux), and the Southwest (Hopi and Santo Domingo)—Thunderbird American Indian Dancers preserve through their performances the varied traditions of the Native American peoples.
Presented in collaboration with the Center for Traditional Music and Dance.

Dance to the Beat of Your Own Drum! 
Japan has a wide array of beautiful instruments used within the performing arts. Japan is perhaps best known for the taiko – a type of drum. Create your own taiko-inspired drum and learn traditional rhythms to play on it.

Presidential Family Dance Party with Arturo Perez
Explore dances like the Tango—danced by former President Barack Obama in Argentina, as Ballroom expert Arturo Perez helps you and the whole family learn different ballroom and partner dances.

Dance Discovery with Broadway performer Angel Reed
Dance with us in a creative and exploratory environment set to live music with Angel Reed. Angel debuted in the original cast of the Broadway musical Rock of Ages, where she was nominated for an Astaire Award for Best Female Dancer.

Bollywood with Shachi Phene of Ajna Dance Company
Bollywood movies are famous for their elaborate dance sequences which combine elements of Indian classical and folk dances, along with those of Jazz, Hip-Hop, Latin, and more. Dance together with Shachi Phene as she shares her expertise in classical Indian dance forms and Bollywood choreography. Shachi is the Assistant Director of Ajna Dance Company.

Hanagasa Odori: Flower Hat Dance Workshop
Create your own hat as artists from The Japanese Folk Dance Institute of NY teach you the fun and easy steps of Hanagasa Odori (The Flower Hat Dance)—a beautiful folk dance from Northern Japan. Afterward, dancers will take you on a Flower Hat Dance parade throughout the Museum.

Make-A-Face Makerspace: Create Your Own Emoji
A picture is worth a thousand words, so say what you want with your own emoji! Generation Code’s makerspace combines art, technology and creativity. They’ll help you put your imagination to work as you design an amazing emoji. Using the Raspberry Pi printer, you’ll transform your design into a souvenir that puts the rest of your refrigerator art to shame!
