Deeper Dives into Dance
July 1 @ 2:00 pm - August 31 @ 4:00 pm
The Children’s Museum of Manhattan hosts daily dance workshops and activities to complement the Museum’s newest exhibit Lets Dance!
Afternoons from 2-4pm the Children’s Museum explores dance making through movement, architecture, design and sound. Programs include:
Syncopation Improvisation Create a variety of rhythms and your own beats when you design working tap shoes. Dance to a variety of music like Jazz and Broadway, and explore different dances that involve tapping like Flamenco and Irish Step Dance.
Dance Fans for fans of Dance Design a dance fan and watch it flow through the air as you danceInspired by fan dances that emerged in China and Japan as early as 1000 B.C. design a fan using ribbons, strings, feathers and streamers to explore traditional dances that tell a story.
Dance Architects Crawl, jump and dance through unusual shapes and architecture found in the Lets Dance! exhibit. Work together to create new architecture and props inspired by dance companies like Pina Bausch, Diavolo, and Streb Lab for Action Mechanics.
Ready Set Dance Use giant cubed dice found in Lets Dance! to play a dance game. Each side of the cube will tell you how to move your body. Play the game and then create your own by designing dance playing cards.
Dance Footprints Engineer a device using markers, crayons, paint, as well as unusual house hold materials to leave a trace of your dance. Dance across our giant paper sheets to see what your dance looks like as you leave a trail of lines and color.
Funding for these programs is made possible with public funding from the Institute for Museum and Library Services, the NYS Council for the Arts and the NYC Department of Cultural Affairs. Additional support comes from the Laurie M. Tisch Illumination Fund and Jody and John Arnhold.
