Parent Workshops

Have CMOM staff meet with your PTA, parent coordinators, or interested parents to explore ways to take creative learning home. All workshops are hands-on and can be scheduled at CMOM or at your site. Come away with ideas about resources throughout the city and how to take better advantage of those in your neighborhood. Alternative workshops are available and can be switched with those recommended below.

Early Learning

Little learners have big ideas.Learn how to build a supportive environment as they stretch their imaginations.

Workshop: Understand how children learn through their senses through a series of messy art projects.

Healthy Living Childhood

Obesity rates continue to rise across the country and families can make a difference. Parents make important choices about what foods are being eaten while still needing to keep a healthy budget.

Workshop: Learn ways to make shopping cooking and eating together fun.

Art at Home

Art can sometimes seem as if it is something found only in a museum but art is about having a creative eye for details.

Workshop: Experiment with materials that can be found in the home including biodegradable packing materials, disposable take out packages and more to inspire creative use of everyday objects.

Science is everywhere and with just a few key ingredients parents can set up their own “lab” in the kitchen.

Ella Fitzgerald: Learn to Improvise!, 10:00am

All ages

10am - 2pm
Ella Fitzgerald was an American jazz vocalist, known during the Harlem Renaissance for her impressive vocal range and her unique style of sung improvisation known as ‘scat’. Learn how music is a form of self expression, from performance to post-production. Sing along with Lady Ella in your own style to experiment with improvisation. Record your unique rendition on an iPad, and use technology to alter the way your voice sounds. Save your finished product to our sound cloud and download it at home!
This program is part of our "Jazzed!: The Changing Beat of 125th Street" exhibit and takes place on the lower level.

Record Spin Art, 10:00am

All ages

10am - 2pm
Explore how records and influenced the spread of jazz and its culture through the Harlem Renaissance. Visitors will then create jazz inspired spin-art records.
This program is part of our "Jazzed!: The Changing Beat of 125th Street" exhibit and takes place on the lower level.
 

Getting Creative with Art: Alphabet Mystery , 10:00am

Be inspired by Alphabet Mystery by Audrey Wood to create a work of art using letters in the alphabet!
Kindergarten Readiness Skills: developing sensory awareness and fine motor skills needed for writing, creative expression, early literacy skills and color recognition.


 

Swept Away: When Water Meets Sand, 10:30am

Explore how water changes ecosystems with our new Erosion Table! Discover water’s power on Earth’s surface by creating rivers and lakes through sand.

Thinking Like a Composer: Understanding Sheet Music (Demo), 11:00am

All ages

Music is made up of notes of different pitches, from low to high. An important characteristic of jazz music is that these notes are arranged in unusual rhythms. Examine a historic score sheet by composers such as Duke Ellington and Mary Lou Williams. Then match the sounds that you hear with notes on the paper and create your own score.

Movement & Circle Time, 11:30am

4 & younger

Sing, move your body and use your listening ears to hear special stories.
Kindergarten Readiness Skills: Learn new vocabulary, build listening skills and learn to be part of a group.

Mural Wall Painting, 12:00pm

4 & younger

Mix paint on the PlayWorks™ Mural Wall.
Kindergarten Readiness Skills: Science Skills (color mixing and cause and effect).

Experiment with Pitch (Demo), 1:30pm

All ages

Join our old fashioned “jug band” while experimenting with sound effects. Blow across the opening of the bottle to produce the lowest or highest sounds to learn about pitch. Does the shape of the bottle affect the sound you make?  What kind of sounds can you produce without water? Can you create notes by adding different amounts of water in each bottle?

Award winning trumpeter, vocalist and composer, Bria Skonberg has performed as a bandleader and guest artist at over 50 jazz venues in North America, Europe, China and Japan. Her debut US album So Is the Day, peaked at #7 on the US National Jazz Charts.
