Parent Workshops

Have CMOM staff meet with your PTA, parent coordinators, or interested parents to explore ways to take creative learning home. All workshops are hands-on and can be scheduled at CMOM or at your site. Come away with ideas about resources throughout the city and how to take better advantage of those in your neighborhood. Alternative workshops are available and can be switched with those recommended below.

Early Learning

Little learners have big ideas.Learn how to build a supportive environment as they stretch their imaginations.

Workshop: Understand how children learn through their senses through a series of messy art projects.

Healthy Living Childhood

Obesity rates continue to rise across the country and families can make a difference. Parents make important choices about what foods are being eaten while still needing to keep a healthy budget.

Art at Home

Art can sometimes seem as if it is something found only in a museum but art is about having a creative eye for details.

Workshop: Experiment with materials that can be found in the home including biodegradable packing materials, disposable take out packages and more to inspire creative use of everyday objects.

Science is everywhere and with just a few key ingredients parents can set up their own “lab” in the kitchen.

Workshop: Experiment with a variety of ingredients in the kitchen to make things change color, float, produce a gas and even erupt.

In The Mood: Painting Musical Emotions, 10:00am

All ages

10am - 4:45pm
Families will be inspired to create artwork by the emotions felt when listening to Jazz. Discover what creates the melancholy mood in Billie Holiday’s voice, or the cheerful sound of Duke Ellington’s Big Band. Explore how your mood is affected by musical elements such as key, melody, harmony and tempo, using a piece of historic sheet music as your canvas.

This program is part of our "Jazzed!: The Changing Beat of 125th Street" exhibit and takes place on the lower level.

Record Cover Design, 10:00am

All ages

Explore the Jazz Culture during the Harlem Renaissance through the beautiful imagery used in historical jazz album covers. Focus on the color, lines and typography used on the historic covers then create your own design for a jazz record.

Little Artist: Rainbow Fish, 10:00am

Learn to share just as The Rainbow Fish does in Marcus Pfister’s story.  Explore texture as you mix and match shinny scales to make a colorful rainbow fish!
Kindergarten Readiness Skills: Learn new descriptive vocabulary, process of creation sensory exploration, color and shape recognition, creative expression.

Swept Away: When Water Meets Sand, 10:30am

Explore how water changes ecosystems with our new Erosion Table! Discover water’s power on Earth’s surface by creating rivers and lakes through sand.

Experiment with Pitch (Demo), 11:00am

All ages

Join our old fashioned “jug band” while experimenting with sound effects. Blow across the opening of the bottle to produce the lowest or highest sounds to learn about pitch. Does the shape of the bottle affect the sound you make?  What kind of sounds can you produce without water? Can you create notes by adding different amounts of water in each bottle?

Movement & Circle Time, 11:30am

4 & younger

Sing, move your body and use your listening ears to hear special stories.
Kindergarten Readiness Skills: Learn new vocabulary, build listening skills and learn to be part of a group.

Mix paint on the PlayWorks™ Mural Wall.

Music and Storytelling: “Cinderella: An Islamic Tale”, 12:30pm

The story of Cinderella is common in different cultures worldwide. Find similarities and differences as the story of the character Zahra unfolds in Fawzia Gilani book Cinderella: An Islamic Tale.

Thinking Like a Composer: Understanding Sheet Music (Demo), 1:30pm

All ages

Music is made up of notes of different pitches, from low to high. An important characteristic of jazz music is that these notes are arranged in unusual rhythms. Examine a historic score sheet by composers such as Duke Ellington and Mary Lou Williams. Then match the sounds that you hear with notes on the paper and create your own score.

Cooking Demonstration with Rimli Roy, 2:00pm

5 & older

Food is an essential part of celebrating Eid al Fitr. Learn about different cuisines and cook a traditional Eid al Fitr dish using the spices turmeric & saffron. Tastings are provided!

Mural Wall Painting, 2:30pm

4 & younger

Kindergarten Readiness Skills: Science Skills (color mixing and cause and effect)

Use tambourines, maracas, bells and rhythm sticks to make beats as CMOM educators lead you in a collaborative and creative jam session.

Listen to iconic performances of jazz music and then read books about the ‘Jazz Legends’ who performed them.
