CMOM Membership Policy

1. For our children's safety, all adults visiting the Museum may be asked to show valid photo ID at the Admissions Desk - whether or not they are carrying the family Membership Card. All adult caretakers must be listed on the account, as unlisted caretakers may be asked to pay admission.

2. If a member/caregiver is not carrying the family Membership Card, he/she must name the Adult Account Holder (correctly spelling their name as necessary) and show ID matching their own name as listed on that account.

3. Memberships are non-transferable and for the exclusive use of a single household as designated on the Membership Card. All children must permanently reside within the same household. Friends, extended family members and caretakers' children are not included on your membership.

CMOM reserves the right to refuse or terminate a membership on any suspicion -proven or otherwise- that CMOM Membership Policy is being violated.

In The Mood: Painting Musical Emotions, 10:00am

All ages

10am - 4:45pm
Families will be inspired to create artwork by the emotions felt when listening to Jazz. Discover what creates the melancholy mood in Billie Holiday’s voice, or the cheerful sound of Duke Ellington’s Big Band. Explore how your mood is affected by musical elements such as key, melody, harmony and tempo, using a piece of historic sheet music as your canvas.

This program is part of our "Jazzed!: The Changing Beat of 125th Street" exhibit and takes place on the lower level.

Romare Bearden - My World as Colorful Melodies, 10:00am

All ages

10am - 4:45pm
Romare Bearden was deeply influenced by jazz music and often listened to it while making art. Listen to jazz music and imagine colors and patterns based on what you hear. Create a work of art inspired by Bearden’s mixed media collage techniques.

Math Wizards: Animal Prints, 10:00am

4 & younger

How many feet does a penguin have? How many paws does a jaguar have?  What about a spider - how many legs do they have?! Make animal “prints” in sand to make interesting patterns!
Kindergarten Readiness Skills: Learn descriptive vocabulary; sensory awareness, develop early math skills.
 

Swept Away: When Water Meets Sand, 10:30am

Explore how water changes ecosystems with our new Erosion Table! Discover water’s power on Earth’s surface by creating rivers and lakes through sand.

All Jazzed Up Performance: Live Piano Music - Hila Kulik, 11:00am

Having performed worldwide and a masters student at Queens College, Hila Kulik won first prize in the Israel "Jazz Player of the Year Competition" in 2009, the Ran Baron scholarships at the Israeli Conservatory, the Sharet Scholarship at the America-Israel Cultural Foundation.
Get into the swing of things with live music provided by a jazz pianist from the Manhattan School of Music! This program is part of our Jazzed! The Changing Beat of 125th Street exhibit and takes place on the lower level.
 

Experiment with Pitch (Demo), 11:00am

All ages

Join our old fashioned “jug band” while experimenting with sound effects. Blow across the opening of the bottle to produce the lowest or highest sounds to learn about pitch. Does the shape of the bottle affect the sound you make?  What kind of sounds can you produce without water? Can you create notes by adding different amounts of water in each bottle?

Become a petit paleontologist and search for dinosaur “fossils” in our dig site!
Kindergarten Readiness Skills: Learn descriptive vocabulary, practice imaginative play and cooperation.

Thinking Like a Composer: Understanding Sheet Music (Demo), 1:30pm

All ages

Music is made up of notes of different pitches, from low to high. An important characteristic of jazz music is that these notes are arranged in unusual rhythms. Examine a historic score sheet by composers such as Duke Ellington and Mary Lou Williams. Then match the sounds that you hear with notes on the paper and create your own score.
