Outreach Programs

Let the Children’s Museum of Manhattan staff come to you. Explore science through experiments and projects, learn literature through authors like Dr. Seuss and Beatrix Potter, or schedule an artist-in-residence program to create sculptures or make prints. Schedule a school-wide fair or weekly classes for an after-school program. All programs conform to New York State and City Performance Standards and are individually adapted to each grade level.

Author Studies
Literacy-based classes build language skills through movement, art and storytelling, exploring the process of authorship and illustration to foster a lifetime love of books and reading.
     
Budding Bookmakers
Recommended for Grades Pre-K – 3 
Designed to introduce students to a wide variety of books and excite them about reading.  Students explore books for both their illustrations and for their content, discussing literacy points including character, setting, cause and affect. Each session begins with an interactive book reading followed by an art activity exploring the techniques used by the illustrator. Peter and Potter
Recommended for Grades K – 2  
Beatrix Potter was herself a scientist.  She published essays on the natural world that surrounded her and inspired her children’s books as well as studies. Discover how she transformed her careful observations into beautiful illustrations and colorful characters such as Peter Rabbit. The Peter and Potter class addresses a different environmental theme each session, beginning with a chapter reading from one of Potter books and ending with a hands-on project.  This class is designed to meet performance standards for life sciences, scientific thinking and investigation.View pdf of class outline. 
     
Seussology
Recommended for Grades 1 – 4

Theodore Geisel began as a political cartoonist before he transformed how children learn to read by writing the Cat in the Hat. Explore the creative process behind the whimsical connections Dr, Seuss made between reading skills, visual literacy and moral messages in this interdisciplinary class. This class meets performance standards for New York State and New York City Department of Education in English language arts and applied learning including communication tools and techniques. The Wonderland of Lewis Carroll
Recommended for Grades 3 – 5
As a Professor of Mathematics Lewis Carroll enjoyed logic games, geometry and optical illusions. Explore how he wove these ideas into the literary classic Alice in Wonderland by exploring the math, geometry and science referenced in the book. Monsters, Minotaurs and Ancient Greek Myths
Recommended for Grades K – 6

In Bug Out! students investigate what insects are, what makes them unique and how they are a crucial part of the environment. The Goofy Graphics class introduces students to design principles through a variety of printing techniques.  Throughout the class students discuss the differences between a unique, one of a kind work of art, a copy, a printed series and a reproduction.
