The Shelter Program for Families in Temporary Housing provides innovative learning opportunities to promote the healthy growth and development of children and families across New York City.
Sessions meet weekly from October through June. Each begins with unstructured time when the program staff and mothers do an art project and chat while the children play with the Museum’s education staff in our specially designed PlayWorks™ classroom. After a shared lunch, the women have their own time, apart from their children, to explore, under the guidance of a social worker, their feelings about parenting, being homeless, and living in NYC. They can get and share advice about challenges they are facing. Afterward, they are provided a prompt for writing.
